From Dennis McLellan’s 2008 L . A . Times article “Fatburger founder expanded South L.A. eatery into chain” In 1947, using bits of scrap materials from her partner (a man who worked at a construction company), Lovie Yancey opened up a three-stool hamburger stand in L . A ., California (on Western Avenue) – it had been called Mr. Fatburger.
By 1952, Lovie parted ways together with her partner therefore did the “Mr.” through the stand’s name. Right away, Lovie was a fixture in the stand where customers, including entertainers Redd Foxx and Ray Charles, would custom-order their burgers. She would work very long days, and sleepless nights, spending just as much time in the stand as she could to ensure everything was being done properly. As word got out that Lovie’s Fatburgers were the very best in the city, she continually got increasingly more requests on her behalf to keep the stand open later, and then, in to the night.
Every meal is cooked-to-order, just how you will need it, each time. Using only the freshest ingredients, and traditional cooking methods (you won’t find heat-lamps or microwaves inside our stands), we’re best known for the fresh-never-frozen, lean-beef, chicken, turkey and veggie burgers & sandwiches, our hand-scooped, real ice cream milkshakes, homemade-from-scratch bannfb rings and build-your-own-burger experience.
